The Piedmont

The name Piedmont translates to “at the foot of the mountains”, which makes sense since the region is on three sides surrounded by the majestic Alps. In between the mountains, the rolling, sometimes hilly, but always magical landscape will enchant you the moment you exit the highway at Asti. The beautiful Piedmont region offers hill-top villages, beautiful churches and impressive castles and fortresses interspersed with vineyards and fields full of hazels. The picturesque De Langhe-Roero and Monferrato are even UNESCO World Heritage. The Piedmont hosts a large variety of grapes and DOCG wines. Let’s have a look at our favorites!

Wine culture

In the immediate surrounding of Calosso mostly Barbera and Moscato di Asti is grown. Every village hosts multiple vine growers and cantinas, and every Barbera and Barbera Superiore has a distinct taste. Apart from the traditional wines, there’s a new generation of, especially young, winemakers focused on breeding new grape crosses. A great example is the Gamba di Pernice, which is grown on our land.

Moving into the direction of Alba, we will find the famous and fantastic Barolo and Barbaresco wines. But let’s not forget about the popular Piedmont white wine: Roero Arneis.

In short, a wine tasting (or multiple ) is a definitive must-do when in the Piedmont! On our Food & Wine page (link) you can read more about the possibilities at local cantinas. Also, do hesitate to contact us for any support in arranging your tastings!

Food

Next to the beautiful wines, the Piedmont is also famous for its own distinct cuisine. Thanks to the location, local dishes can be influenced by the Italian, French and even Swiss cuisine. Famous dishes are Agnolotti (stuffed pasta cushions), Vitello Tonnato and Bagna càuda, a fondue style dish. At the many local markets you will find a plethora of cheese and sausages (salumi). And when around, don’t forget to visit one of the wine or truffle festivals. Have a look at the activities page or contact us to find out where and when they take place.

Culture

Ever since the very first inhabitants (the Ligurians) settled in the region, the Piedmont was and is of great importance to the Italy we know today. One of the most famous former rulers of the region, the House of Savoy (Casa di Savoia), played a major role in the origin of modern day Italy. Thanks to this history we can today visit and enjoy the most beautiful cities, palaces and much more.

You can organize a day trip to the capital Turin (90 km), or cross the regional border, to visit one of the other major cities in the area: Genoa (120 km) or Milan (150 km). But also pay a visit to the smaller, but as rich and beautiful other famous cities like Alba, Asti, Nizza Monferrato, Canelli , Agliano Terme or Aqui Terme. All of those cities are located within a 5 to 40 km radius from our bed and breakfast.

Close to home

At walking distance, in Piana del Salto, you can find a small supermarket, restaurant / pizzeria, enoteca (selling local wines) and church. In Calosso, at 2,5 km from the house, you will find two restaurants, a cafferaria, a post office, pharmacy and ATM.
